Live recording
Publication 1982
Recording October 1981
Length 79:03
Producer Jean Michel Jarre
Label Disques Dreyfus
Notes: Recorded from the historical China Tour of 1981 in Beijing and Shanghai.

This recording is a double LP taken from the 5 concerts in China Jarre and 3 of his musicians gave in Autumn 1981. It shows large excerpts of Jarre’s two previous albums : Équinoxe and Magnetic Fields. Jarre has used for the first time an electronic device known as the laser harp, of what one of the songs is named upon.

Jarre composed extra-6 unreleased material, the most spectacular one of them being Fishing Junks at Sunset, that blends synthesizers and traditional chinese music. This track is a very old chinese tune (Fisherman’s chant at dusk) that Jarre has put synth elements into and plays along with the Beijing Conservatoire Orchestra.

Other unreleased material containes here are : “Arpegiator”, “Laser Harp”, “Night in Shanghai”, “Orient Express” and “Souvenir of China”. A slow-paced version of Magnetic Fields, part 1 has been called “The Overture”. Overall, it is one the finest Jarre recordings up to date, feeding fresh proof of Jarre’s mastership under live performances.

A bootleg of other Jarre’s performance in the first Beijing concert has spread in the fans’ community. It contains unpublished versions of Oxygène 1, 2, Equinoxe 8, Magnetic Fields 1 and 2 and an alternative-eighteen minute long version of Fishing Junks at Sunset.
